With a free 12 week programme available, you’ll be able to manage this cool challenge whatever your fitness level. So if you’re a weaker swimmer, the training will get you swimming and achieving milestones regularly while more competent swimmers can get started with trying to improve their time on the mile.
If you’re training in a 25m pool, you’ll need to swim 64 lengths to clock up a mile, so why not set yourself a target and get training…
A mile of swimming is the equivalent of a marathon in the water and is longer than any Olympic pool based race, making it the ultimate test in the sport.

If you’ve got swimming issues that you want to get sorted, then make sure you get along to the free coaching sessions which will be held during the Swim for a Mile challenge where coaches can help finesse your swimming skills.
Find your nearest participating pool here and start building up your lengths – at the end of the programme a series of timed events will be held in over 50 pools across Ireland in the first week of April.
This year, there’s the option of doing a 800m relay programme with friends if you fancy company during your training while the programme opens up for 12-16 year olds this year to encourage them to keep up their swimming skills.
