What is functional medicine?
It’s a bit of a buzz word at the moment, big in America and growing here. We asked nutritionist Maev Creaven to explain what functional medicine is and how it can help you.
More people are finding solutions to their health concerns with functional medicine, a new model for healthcare that addresses lifestyle-related chronic diseases.
You wake up in the morning a little tired with a stuffy nose and a headache. Your digestive health hasn’t been right for a while and you are feeling unwell. When feeling off, we are hard-wired to go straight to our local GP. Often before entering the surgery, you’ve already made up your mind to get a prescription.
Is this the right approach?
Most likely not! Antibiotics are powerful medicines that fight bacterial infections. Used properly, they can save lives but all too often they are over-prescribed and can make people sicker. The intelligent approach is to sustain long-term health using the principles of Functional Medicine.
Functional medicine is a bridge between alternative and conventional medicine, not a replacement.
The main causes of chronic disease are known and are largely preventable. Lifestyle factors and poor diet are key risk factors. Functional Medicine is the most effective way to treat and support patients—particularly those with chronic health issues.
Functional Medicine Doctors and practitioners look to get to the root cause of symptoms rather than using medication to suppress symptoms. This is called root cause resolution. They also educate and advise clients/patients how to take control of their health through diet and lifestyle.
So what is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a health-focused, patient-centric partnership, in which practitioner and patient work together to dig deep and find out the causes of illness and disease.
Practitioners examine their patient’s unique history, environment, lifestyle and underlying factors, and then develop a health-protocol to help restore the patient to good health and them back on a path to health and vitality.
